The other day, while eating lunch with my friend Kristen, she asked me if I had ever heard of Pierre the Penguin. She said that apparently he is quite famous, which she never knew until seeing him at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Here is is story. . .
In 2006, Pierre, who is an African penguin, started to get bald patches on his head and tail. With this new hair loss, Pierre was getting picked on by the other penguins in his habitat. Also, he would hardly swim because it would make him too cold. The marine biologist that worked with him tried to keep him warm with a heat lamp, but still he would shiver. The situation was starting to become dangerous, but that is when it hit them. . . .if wet suits are used to keep humans warm in the frigid waters, then why not make one for a penguin?!
And so they did. It fastened with Velcro in the back for a snug fit, and after only six weeks wearing it, his feathers started to regrow. At first they were worried about how the other penguins would treat him in reaction to his suit, but after sporting it, he was once again the alpha male he had once been. In fact, they seemed to be a little jealous of his suit!
Now there is even a kids book written about the little guy!
I think I might just have to get it.
