Friday Songs. . .

So this week has been filled with some really wonderful music, because of this I am posting 4 great songs.  I figure you can never get too much good music!  (PS. the picture above comes from an amazing website that will be in the next post.)

First song is from a a band called The Unseen Guest.  This is what they say about their 2nd album, which in itself is brilliant!

“Their 2nd album Checkpoint, like their first album, beautifully weaves two influences into a seamless whole. The instrumentation combines bluesy melodies with elements from pop, folk, rock and free jazz. At times world weary, at times full of joy, Checkpoint is a traveller’s diary, full of witnessed dualities and memories recorded on the spur of the moment. Not the clichés of East and West, but the stuff of novels and good movies: wanderlust versus security, love versus cynicism, the wildness of Saturday night and the regrets of Sunday morning.”

The Unseen Guest :: Listen My Son

The next is from a band ‘Portugal, The Man’.  This song just had such a fun chorus and seemed like a great song to listen to while making cookies or drinking your morning coffee while it is raining outside.

Next is from Rocky Votolato, who is from the great Northwest! (Seattle to be exact).  In his bio, he is described as this;

“his gravelly, sandpaper smooth voice and introspective lyrics mark him as that most rare of punk-rocker-turned-acoustic-troubadours: Votolato writes graceful, understated, human, unpretentious songs, demonstrating that simplicity is still a viable option for accomplished songwriters.”

 Here is just one song from him that I absolutely love, hopefully you will too.

Rocky Votolato :: White Daisy Passing

And lastly, is a song from Bon Iver, called Skinny Lover.  This is a band, founded in 2007 by Justin Vernon, which also included three other members.  The name Bon Iver comes from a french phrase meaning “good winter”.  They chose this because most of the debut album was recorded in a remote cabin in Wisconsin.

During their live performances for the songs from For Emma, Forever Ago, they did something quite great.  They were really concerned that there wouldn’t be enough voices to duplicate the sound of the songs on the album in a live setting because of the extensive use of vocal harmony.  So to fix this, they passed out lyrics for some of the songs to the audience and had them sing along to compensate for this.  I bet it sounded amazing.  So here you go. . .. hope you enjoy!

I have made many of my friends a cd with this song on it, but I thought I would post it anyways.  I first heard it in the movie “Fantastic Mr. Fox” , which I think is a brilliant film.  But every time I hear this song, it instantly puts me in a good mood!  Hope you all had a wonderful week and got a little dance in.

The Bobby Fuller Four :: Let Her Dance

The Man In Black

Today is the eight anniversary of the passing of Johnny Cash.  He died of complications from diabetes, but his health was said to have worsened prior due to a broken heart after the passing of his wife, June Carter Cash.  He is buried in Hendersonville Memory Gardens in Henersonville, Tennessee.

How sweet is this picture of the two of them. . .
